The largest producer of polypropylene in Europe selected the ALTAÏR CMMS from DSDSYSTEM to manage its spare parts and maintenance operations. The ALTAÏR CMMS from DSDSYSTEM also allowed Polychim Industrie to prepare for the ten-yearly shutdown of its site in 2010.
Founded in 1990, Polychim Industrie has become the European leader in polypropylene granulates thanks to a state of the art technology and an innovative manufacturing process, whereby a powder is initially obtained through a reaction on a fluidized bed in the reactor, then granulated using corresponding additives for different applications. The use of polypropylene is becoming increasingly widespread in a large number of growth sectors. Polychim Industrie’s granulates are therefore used for a large number of applications, such as BCF carpet yarn, fibers for needle punch carpet, tapes and carpet backing as well as for the injection molding of parts for items such as containers for food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, for garden furniture and even for car interiors.
The fully web-enabled ALTAÏR CMMS solution from DSDSYSTEM, which has been used by Polychim Industrie since March 2009, was chosen following an analysis and audit of the leading solutions in the CMMS market.
“We had a two-fold objective,” comments Etienne Dejonghe, head of maintenance at Polychim Industrie. “Firstly, we were looking to select a new CMMS solution to replace our previous system which had relied on a wide range of computer files and required a large number of manual operations. Next, the new solution needed to meet a strategic planning requirement; to help us prepare for the ten-yearly shutdown of our production site. This shutdown, which took place in 2010, involves a significant number of very large maintenance works being performed in only a few weeks. Alongside these two major objectives, we wanted to adopt a solution that could easily be integrated with our IT system and which would ensure the seamless recovery of our existing databases.”
Progressive increase in the use of the ALTAÏR CMMS
Having initially been dedicated to the management of spare parts, the use of ALTAÏR was extended from June 2009 to include control commands, thanks to the integration of data files as part of the new solution. In a second phase, ALTAÏR also encompassed the management of work orders, providing Polychim Industrie with the functionality to have real-time visibility of tasks and equipment.
Etienne Dejonghe continues, “The majority of solutions on the market, although very advanced from a functional point of view, are not always suitable for use by SMEs such as Polychim Industrie. DSDSYSTEM has quickly set itself apart through its technological leadership, its ease of use and the very practical approach which governed the design of ALTAÏR. The architecture of this solution offers great flexibility for adaptation and evolution with its simple plug-ins. This aspect of the solution has allowed us to easily set up various specific functions such as the migration of Excel data files or the export of Winproject work orders. Today, ALTAÏR allows us to manage our maintenance operations from an operational point of view, while helping us to optimize the management of our budgets and our suppliers.”
Management of the ten-yearly shutdown
Taking into account its second main objective, Polychim Industrie adopted ALTAÏR from DSDSYSTEM equally because of the advanced planning functions offered by the solution. These have allowed Polychim Industrie to prepare the ten-yearly shutdown of its manufacturing site in Loon-Plage, which took place in 2010. The planning of hundreds of tests and checks which had to be performed on the company’s plant and equipment was managed directly within ALTAÏR, allowing Polychim Industrie to define and adjust its scheduling according to technical and operational constraints.
